TRAVELING WITH YOUR DOG IN TUSCANY AND UMBRIA? YES, EVEN TO THE THEATRE.

TRAVELING WITH YOUR DOG IN TUSCANY AND UMBRIA? YES, EVEN TO THE THEATRE.

Yes, you read that right.

I’ve gone to the theatre in Sarteano with my dog. I’ve even been to the cinema in Chiusi with her, and she sat through the entire film like a true cinephile (ok, maybe she napped a little, but still—she was quiet).

Because here in Tuscany and Umbria, dogs aren’t just tolerated. They’re basically locals.

From medieval villages to lazy afternoons at the lake, traveling with your dog in this part of Italy is not just possible—it’s delightful. And if your dog is like mine—equal parts diva and truffle-hunter—they’ll fit right in.

🐾 Where Your Dog is Welcome (Like Royalty)

Restaurants? Yes. Just make sure your pup behaves better than some humans (you know the ones).

Shops? Most. Bonus points if your dog is photogenic, because chances are someone will want to take their picture.

In Chiusi, Siena there is even a dog photographer!

Agriturismi, wineries, villas? Many are dog-friendly—and come with big gardens and plenty of shade for naps.

Lakes and nature trails? Try Lake of Bolsena (the best), Trasimeno, Lake Chiusi, or Lake of Montepulciano —all surrounded by scenic walks and plenty of splashy swim spots.

Some Local Tips:

  • Carry a leash, even if your dog is the saintly type. It’s required in most public places.
  • Bring a portable water bowl. It gets hot and your dog will thank you.
  • Gelaterie sometimes  have special “gelato per cani” (yes, dog ice cream).
  • Train rides? Yup, dogs can come too. Just check the rules for size and tickets.  (Better to carry ob a muzzle in your bag, just for very old rules that sometimes come out).  My dog has never used it!

✨ Bonus: Most Locals Are Dog People

Your pup may come home with more Italian friends than you do. That’s just how it goes.

“As CEO of my life and this blog, I proudly endorse dog-friendly travel in Tuscany and Umbria—because life’s just better when your dog is living la dolce vita too.”
