San Casciano dei Bagni: Hot Springs, Truffles, E-Bikes & a Little Etruscan Mystery

One of southern Tuscany’s most charming villages, where ancient thermal waters, wonderful food and beautiful countryside make the perfect day trip.

There are places in Tuscany where you go to see something famous. And then there are places where you go simply to enjoy being in Italy.

San Casciano dei Bagni is definitely one of my favourites.

Tucked away in the rolling hills of southern Tuscany, near the border with Umbria, this beautiful medieval village has everything I love: delicious food, natural hot springs, picturesque countryside, truffles, excellent wines and centuries of fascinating history.

And the best part? You can enjoy it all without the crowds of Florence or Siena.

Here’s how I would spend a perfect day in San Casciano dei Bagni.

1. Start With Lunch at Ristorante Daniela

Being Italian, I have my priorities.

And when planning a day trip, lunch is usually at the top of the list!

One of my favourite recommendations in San Casciano dei Bagni is Ristorante Daniela, right in the village.

It’s a lovely place to enjoy traditional Tuscan cooking, local ingredients and a good glass of wine.

They also produce their own wines and have a little shop next door.

My suggestion? Don’t rush. A proper Tuscan lunch deserves time.

2. Discover the Santuario Ritrovato: Tuscany’s Ancient Secret

Here is something extraordinary.

Beneath the thermal waters of San Casciano dei Bagni, archaeologists discovered one of Italy’s most remarkable collections of Etruscan and Roman bronze statues.

The ancient sanctuary at Bagno Grande revealed beautifully preserved sculptures, thousands of coins and sacred offerings dating back more than 2,000 years.

Today, visitors can join guided archaeological walks to discover the excavation area and learn about the people who once worshipped at these healing waters.

Guided visits: Saturdays at 11 AM, according to the autumn–winter 2026 programme.

Duration: Approximately two hours.

Information and bookings: +39 0578 58141

Advance booking is recommended, and the schedule should be confirmed before visiting.

The original bronze statues are not currently displayed at the archaeological site.

I’ve written a separate guide explaining the discovery, its history and how to organise your visit.

3. Explore Monte Cetona by E-Bike

Want to see the Tuscan countryside without spending the entire day in a car?

Rent an e-bike!

The countryside around San Casciano dei Bagni is absolutely beautiful, with quiet roads, woodland, olive groves and little villages that feel wonderfully far from everyday life.

One of my favourite suggested routes takes you towards Monte Cetona and Fonte Vetriana, a picturesque little village surrounded by nature.

The route is approximately 32.8 km, with around three hours of cycling and four hours for the complete excursion.

And believe me, an electric motor is a very welcome companion on those Tuscan hills.

4. Go Truffle Hunting at Podere Bulgherino

If there’s one thing I love almost as much as cooking, it’s discovering where our food comes from.

And truffle hunting is one of the most enjoyable countryside experiences in Tuscany.

At Podere Bulgherino, a certified organic farm, you can enquire about seasonal truffle experiences and discover their farm products, including wine, olive oil and legumes.

Depending on the season, the area produces different varieties of truffles.

  • Marzuolo truffles: January to April.
  • Black summer truffles (Scorzone): June to November.

The experience is a wonderful way to discover the relationship between local food, nature and the traditions of southern Tuscany.

5. Treat Yourself to a Thermal Spa Experience at Fonteverde

San Casciano dei Bagni has been famous for its thermal waters since ancient times.

And after a morning exploring the countryside, what could be better than relaxing in warm thermal water?

Fonteverde is a renowned thermal spa surrounded by the beautiful hills of southern Tuscany.

You can enquire about thermal pools, massages and wellness treatments.

It’s a lovely option for couples, friends or anyone who simply wants an afternoon of relaxation.

And let’s face it: a little pampering never ruined a Tuscan holiday.

6. Discover the Natural Hot Springs of Bagno Grande

Prefer something more natural?

At the foot of the village, the historic thermal pools of Bagno Grande are part of San Casciano’s extraordinary heritage.

I have often enjoyed walking in this area, sometimes accompanied by my Labrador, Costantino.

There is something special about being surrounded by the Tuscan countryside, knowing that people have visited these waters for thousands of years.

The old stone pools and washhouses tell the story of a tradition that existed long before modern spas.

A little practical advice: Because of the archaeological excavations, access to certain areas can be restricted. Always respect local signs and check current bathing arrangements before visiting.

7. Get Lost in the Medieval Village

One of my favourite things to do in Tuscany costs absolutely nothing.

Just wander.

San Casciano dei Bagni is perfect for this.

Take a walk through its narrow streets, admire the stone houses, enjoy the countryside views and stop for a coffee.

There is no need for a complicated itinerary.

Sometimes the best moments of a holiday happen when you have absolutely nothing planned.

My Perfect Day in San Casciano dei Bagni

If you’re visiting on a Saturday, this is how I would organise it:

11:00 AM — A little ancient history

Join the guided visit to the Santuario Ritrovato, booking in advance.

1:15–1:30 PM — A proper Tuscan lunch

Head to Ristorante Daniela for local food and wine.

3:00 PM — Discover the village

Walk through the medieval streets and enjoy the beautiful views.

Late afternoon — Time to relax

Book a thermal spa experience at Fonteverde or enjoy a peaceful walk around the historic thermal area.

If you prefer something more adventurous, dedicate another morning to e-biking or truffle hunting.

Why Visit San Casciano dei Bagni?

Because Tuscany is not only about famous cities and crowded attractions.

It’s also about tiny villages, family restaurants, countryside adventures, centuries-old traditions and the pleasure of slowing down.

San Casciano dei Bagni combines all of these beautifully.

Whether you’re interested in Etruscan history, thermal spas, truffle hunting, cycling or simply enjoying a wonderful Tuscan lunch, it’s a lovely destination for a half-day or full-day excursion.

And if you’re staying around Paciano, Lake Trasimeno, Chiusi or Città della Pieve, it’s an excellent place to add to your Tuscany and Umbria itinerary.
