Foligno Travel Guide

Foligno Travel Guide: Best Restaurants, Local Food, Shopping & Top Things To Do in Umbria
Foligno is one of Umbria’s most authentic towns: lively but never too touristy, proud of its food traditions,
medieval history and strong local identity. It’s a perfect base for exploring central Italy and for tasting
“real life” in the centro de lu munnu – the “center of the world”, as locals love to call it.
In this Foligno travel guide you’ll find my favorite restaurants (from rustic osterie to a Michelin-starred gem),
the best places to try traditional desserts, where to shop, and the top cultural sights – including Gothic palaces
and contemporary art in a former church.
Where to Eat in Foligno
- La Mattera – AntiQua Osteria Why go: A cosy, traditional osteria serving classic Umbrian comfort food, including the much-loved piccione alla folignate (local pigeon specialty). Expect generous portions, a warm welcome and a very local atmosphere in a small lane just off the historic center. Website: lamatterafoligno.it
- Il Cavaliere Why go: A reference point for traditional Umbrian cuisine in Foligno, with a strong focus on meat, mushrooms and truffles. This is the place for rich, seasonal dishes and a classic Italian dining room where locals still celebrate special occasions. Website: lcavaliereristorante.it
- Locanda in Via Gramsci (La Locanda di Zucca) Why go: A rustic and welcoming locanda just off Via Gramsci, serving typical Umbrian dishes with local, seasonal ingredients and plenty of character. Think fresh bread, grilled meats, vegetables from nearby farms and homemade desserts in a stone-walled dining room. More info: La Locanda di Zucca – Facebook
- La Cereria delle Conce (Rione Spada) Why go: Housed in a beautifully restored former candle factory in the historic Rione Spada, La Cereria delle Conce blends history and contemporary design. The kitchen focuses on refined Umbrian cuisine, quality ingredients and well-balanced plates, served beneath the old vaults and porticoes of the Conce. Website: cereriadelleconce.it
- I Agri Bistro – Agribistrò (Capre loro produzione) Why go: An “agri-bistro” that combines restaurant and small dairy, with a strong farm-to-table philosophy. Here goat’s milk and cheeses from their own production play the starring role, together with other local, organic ingredients. Expect simple, sincere dishes that showcase the fruits of Umbrian countryside: fresh cheeses, rustic pastas and house-made desserts. More info: Agribistrò – Facebook
- Une (Michelin Star, Capodacqua – near Foligno) Why go: Just outside Foligno in the hamlet of Capodacqua, Une is a Michelin-starred fine-dining restaurant housed in a converted 17th-century mill. Chef Giulio Gigli creates highly creative menus that reinterpret Umbrian ingredients with modern techniques and a strong sense of place – many products come from within about 20 km of the restaurant. Tasting menus like “Acquedotto” and “Relazioni” are an excellent way to experience the territory through multiple small courses, in a rustic-chic setting where stone, wood and softly lit interiors create a very special atmosphere. Foligno Specialty: La Rocciata
No visit to Foligno is complete without tasting la rocciata, a traditional Umbrian dessert made
with a thin pastry rolled around a rich filling of apples, dried fruits, nuts, spices and sometimes a touch of
alchermes. It’s rustic, fragrant and very addictive – the kind of cake Italian grandmothers used to bake at home.
Best bakeries for rocciata in Foligno:
- Forno Santa Rita – A beloved bakery and bar where you can pick up excellent rocciata, breads and pastries. Info: Forno Santa Rita – contact details
- Forno Frontino (also a bar) – A local bar/bakery popular among residents for breakfast and sweet treats, including rocciata. It’s a very “neighbourhood” spot; ask locals in the centre for directions. Note: this is a small local place and does not currently appear to have an official website.
Where to Shop in Foligno
- Paris-Match What you’ll find: Elegant, timeless Italian clothing in the heart of Foligno, with a curated selection of shoes and accessories. A great stop if you’re looking for something stylish but not overly flashy – perfect for both everyday wear and a chic dinner outfit. More info: Paris-Match Foligno – Instagram
- Café del Mar (menswear boutique) What you’ll find: A contemporary Italian fashion concept born in Foligno, with an edgy, industrial-inspired interior and a focus on young, urban style. Expect a mix of casual pieces, denim, and statement items in a space that feels more like a cool loft than a traditional shop.
Top Things To Do in Foligno
Duomo di Foligno – Cattedrale di San Feliciano
- The Duomo di Foligno, dedicated to San Feliciano, dominates Piazza della Repubblica and is one of
the city’s key monuments. Its layered architecture reflects centuries of history, from Romanesque origins to later
Baroque interventions, and it remains the spiritual and urban heart of Foligno.
- Auditorium San Domenico
Once a Dominican convent church (post-1285), Auditorium San Domenico is now a spectacular cultural
venue used for concerts, theatre and events. The interior, with its high vaults and restored fresco fragments, is a
beautiful example of how historic religious spaces can be reimagined for contemporary use.
- Museo della Stampa
Housed in historic Palazzo Orfini, the Museo della Stampa celebrates Foligno’s printing heritage:
this is where, in 1472, one of the earliest printed editions of Dante’s Divine Comedy was produced. Inside
you’ll find old presses, tools and a fascinating journey through the history of paper and print.
- Giardino dei Canapè
A leafy park just outside the historic centre, Giardino dei Canapè is perfect for a stroll, a
morning coffee on a bench or a little break between sightseeing and aperitivo. Families love it, and it’s also a
nice place to feel the rhythm of everyday life in Foligno.
- Palazzo Trinci. Palazzo Trinci is one of Umbria’s most elegant late-Gothic palaces (ca. 1389-1407) and was once the
residence of the Trinci family, who ruled Foligno in the Middle Ages. Inside you’ll find a remarkable cycle of
frescoes attributed to Gentile da Fabriano and his workshop, including the famous
Sala delle Arti Liberali e dei Pianeti and the loggia with scenes of Romulus and Remus.
Calamita Cosmica – Gino De Dominicis (CIAC, ex Chiesa della SS. Trinità in Annunziata)
For a striking contrast with medieval Foligno, visit the monumental sculpture
Calamita Cosmica by Gino De Dominicis. This 24-metre-long skeletal figure with a bird-like nose is
displayed inside the deconsecrated former church of SS. Trinità in Annunziata, now part of the CIAC
(Centro Italiano Arte Contemporanea). The work plays with scale, mystery and the relationship between human and
cosmic dimensions – it’s unforgettable. Official site: calamitacosmica.it
La Giostra della Quintana
If you’re in Foligno in June or September, don’t miss the Giostra della Quintana, a spectacular
historical jousting tournament between the city’s ten rioni (neighbourhoods). Costumed parades, taverne
rionali serving traditional dishes, drums, flags and horses transform the entire city into a 17th-century stage.
It’s one of Umbria’s most atmospheric festivals. Official site & calendar: quintana.it
Why Visit Foligno (and What to Combine It With)
Foligno gives you a real taste of Umbrian life: excellent food, strong traditions, friendly locals and a strategic
position in the heart of the region. It’s easy to reach by train and car, and makes a great base for exploring:
- Assisi – for Franciscan history, basilicas and sweeping views.
- Perugia – for hill-town vibes, chocolate and university energy.
- Torgiano & the Lungarotti Wine Museum – for wine lovers and culture combined.
Stay a few days, eat in both rustic trattorie and at least one “special” restaurant like Une, try rocciata still
warm from the bakery, and let Foligno show you why Umbria is so irresistible when you slow down and live it like a
local.
